The time of Enlightenment additionally presented to us that society is organized by a general way of thinking that ââ¬Å"we are what we buy,â⬠or become tied up with. We should deliver and convey so as to be feasible, and a considerable lot of us today characterize ourselves by our occupations. As to religion, Voltaire expressed (summarized) ââ¬Å"If God didn't exist, we'd design him.â⬠ââ¬Å"It is exceptionally obvious that we don't have the foggiest idea about any too well what the spirit is: nobody has ever observed it. All that we do know is that the endless Lord of nature has given us the intensity of deduction, and of recognizing ethicalness. It isn't demonstrated that this staff endures our demise: however the opposite isn't demonstrated either. It is conceivable, without a doubt, that God has offered thought to a molecule to which, after we are no more, He will even now give the intensity of thought: there is no irregularity in this idea.â⬠(e.g., Voltaire, ââ¬Å"Universal Toleration,â⬠â⬠¦.) Finally, the Age of Enlightenment thinkers instructed us that individuals are best left self-administered. To the greatest advantage of human rights, the nobility (the rich and amazing) can't be permitted to be the main decision pattern and from this we determined our guideline convictions about majority rules system. Today, the French Republic is administered by the individuals and has a chosen president and national agents called a parliament. France was under outright government (gentry) until 1789, at that point it went to a republic government, back to a government, lastly, by 1850, was a Republic once more. Did the progressives change France into an illuminated country? Truly. Did the progressives change the country of France into an edified perspective? Faulty, best case scenario. The model is utilized for dynamic in diabetes medicines, distinguish boundaries and better consideration results for the individuals with diabetes. This model is propelled by Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the National Institute of Diabetes and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK). Group of three model is an associate report where the framework factors incorporate structure of the medicinal services framework, ailment the executives steps, referral care and the board, installment administrations and motivating forces, cost-control steps and utilization of data fr amework. During the time spent consideration the model uses HbA1c testing, lipid testing, retinal assessments, miniaturized scale albuminuria testing, yearly foot assessments, and solution of headache medicine. The wellbeing result desires incorporate the glycemic control, circulatory strain control, use and cost control, the board of wellbeing status and manifestations, that incorporates cardiovascular malady, renal ailment, retinopathy, and cholesterol control (Translating Disease Into Action for Diabetes Fact Sheet, 2011). Why Meth and Alcohol Is a Deadly Combo
Why Meth and Alcohol Is a Deadly Combo Addiction Drug Use Meth Print Risks of Mixing Meth With Alcohol By Naveed Saleh, MD, MS twitter linkedin Naveed Saleh, MD, MS, is a medical writer and editor covering new treatments and trending health news. Fonseca/Getty Images More in Addiction Drug Use Meth Cocaine Heroin Marijuana Ecstasy/MDMA Hallucinogens Opioids Prescription Medications Alcohol Use Addictive Behaviors Nicotine Use Coping and Recovery The prospect of mixing meth (methamphetamine) and alcohol probably seems foreign to most of us. However, certain similar combinations do pop up more frequently in daily life. For example, this combination is akinâ"but more dangerousâ"to smoking while drinking, or cutting hard liquor with Coca-Cola or Red Bull. In other words, in a legal and more restrained manner, mixing a stimulant (nicotine or caffeine) with alcohol (a depressant) is similar to mixing meth (a stimulant) with alcohol. (Technically, nicotine has both stimulant and depressant properties, but you get the picture.) The number of people who drink regularly and smoke crystal meth is concerning: one study estimated that daily drinkers were five times more likely to smoke meth. Why People Use Alcohol and Meth Together Polysubstance abuse is common. People use many types of drugs to adjust highs (think cocaine, ecstasy, and marijuana). Mixing meth and alcohol is no different. Researchers believe that people who mix alcohol and meth do so in order to counteract the depressant effects of alcohol and still maintain its euphoric effects. In 2008, 24% of methamphetamine-related emergency department visits involved alcohol intoxication. What Research Says About Using Alcohol and Meth in Combination In 2011, researchers from Columbia University and the New York Psychiatric Institute periodically administered solutions of alcohol mixed with methamphetamine to nine adult men.?? These men were housed in a residential laboratory at New York Psychiatric Institute for 20 days. In this study, adult participants were recruited who had reported past amphetamine use and recent alcohol use. Moreover, participants were screened and excluded for separate medical and psychiatric illness. Thus, all the participants in this study had long histories of polysubstance abuse and none of them were naive to the effect of meth mixed with alcohol. Participants were monitored and tested in a variety of ways including breath alcohol concentrations; cardiovascular, subjective, and cognitive/psychomotor performance; and objective sleep measures. Here are some findings from the study: Co-administration of alcohol and meth increased cardiovascular measures (increased heart rate and blood pressure) and feelings of euphoria. This drug combination made participants feel less drunk or sedated.Meth counteracted some of the cognitive and psychomotor impairment caused by alcohol.Taken together, these drugs produced fewer sleep disruptions than did meth alone.Participants developed tolerance to the drug combination as the study proceeded, diminishing some of the adverse effects listed above.Except for increased heart rate and some upset stomach, participants experienced few residual effects. This study had definite limitations. First, the administration of the meth-alcohol combination in no way mimics real-world scenarios. Specifically, most people drink alcohol and either smoke or snort meth in an unregulated manner. Second, the study includes only nine participants. Third, people in the study were allowed to smoke cigarettes, introducing nicotine as a confounding variable. (Participants actually smoked more when taking the drug combo.) Results from this study suggest that when taken together, meth and alcohol act in a fashion different from taking either drug alone. Meth and alcohols contradictory effects are concerning for at least two reasons. First, people who use both drugs simultaneously may drink more alcohol in order to feel more inebriated or feel its accustomed effectsâ"thus leading to alcohol toxicity. Second, people who end up drinking more while high on meth may underestimate cognitive impairment and get behind the wheel of a car thus putting others at risk. Top 5 Things to Know About Crystal Meth The Bottom Line The distinct combined effects of meth and alcohol should serve as an ominous reminder to health-care professionals that various permutations of polysubstance misuse are distinct entities. With this knowledge in mind, physicians can better assess inebriated or impaired patients rushed to the ER. Mixing certain drugs (illicit, prescription, and non-prescription) can result in distinct adverse effects that may be dangerousâ"especially if you have other psychiatric or medical conditions. If you or someone you love is abusing or misusing one or several drugs, please keep in mind that there is effective help available. The Plant History of the Marvelous Soybean
Soybean (Glycine max) is believed to have been domesticated from its wild relative Glycine soja, in China between 6,000 and 9,000 years ago, although the specific region is unclear. The problem is, the current geographic range of wild soybeans is throughout East Asia and extending into neighboring regions such as the Russian far east, the Korean peninsula and Japan. Scholars suggest that, as with many other domesticated plants, the process of soybean domestication was a slow one, perhaps taking place over a period of between 1,000-2,000 years. Domesticated and Wild Traits Wild soybeans grow in the form of creepers with many lateral branches, and it has a comparatively longer growing season than the domesticated version, flowering later than cultivated soybean. Wild soybean produces tiny black seeds rather than large yellow ones, and its pods shatter easily, promoting long-distance seed dispersal, which farmers generally disapprove of. Domestic landraces are smaller, bushier plants with upright stems; cultivars such as that for edamame have erect and compact stem architecture, high harvest percentages and high seed yield. Other traits bred in by ancient farmers include pest and disease resistance, increased yield, improved quality, male sterility, and fertility restoration; but wild beans are still more adaptive to a wider range of natural environments and are resistant to drought and salt stress. History of Use and Development To date, the earliest documented evidence for the use of Glycine of any kind comes from charred plant remains of wild soybean recovered from Jiahu in Henan province China, a Neolithic site occupied between 9000 and 7800 calendar years ago (cal bp). DNA-based evidence for soybeans has been recovered from the early Jomon component levels of Sannai Maruyama, Japan (ca. 4800 to 3000 BC). Beans from Torihama in the Fukui prefecture of Japan were AMS dated to 5000 cal bp: those beans are plenty large enough to represent the domestic version. The Middle Jomon [3000-2000 BC) site of Shimoyakebe had soybeans, one of which was AMS dated to between 4890-4960 cal BP. It is considered domestic based on size; soybean impressions on Middle Jomon pots are also significantly larger than wild soybeans. Bottlenecks and the Lack of Genetic Diversity The genome of wild soybeans was reported in 2010 (Kim et al). While most scholars agree that DNA supports a single point of origin, the effect of that domestication has created some unusual characteristics. One readily visible, the keen difference between wild and domestic soybean exists: the domestic version has about half the nucleotide diversity than that which is found in wild soybean--the percentage of loss varies from cultivar to cultivar. A study published in 2015 (Zhao et al.) suggests that genetic diversity was reduced by 37.5% in the early domestication process, and then another 8.3% in later genetic improvements. According to Guo et al., that might well have been related to Glycines ability to self-pollinate. Historical Documentation The earliest historical evidence for soybean use comes from Shang dynasty reports, written sometime between 1700 to 1100 BC. Whole beans were cooked or fermented into a paste and used in various dishes. By the Song Dynasty (960 to 1280 AD), soybeans had an explosion of uses; and in the 16th century AD, the beans spread throughout southeast Asia. The first recorded soybean in Europe was in Carolus Linnaeuss Hortus Cliffortianus, compiled in 1737. Soybeans were first grown for ornamental purposes in England and France; in 1804 Yugoslavia, they were grown as a supplement in animal feed. The first documented use in the US was in 1765, in Georgia. In 1917, it was discovered that heating soybean meal made it suitable as livestock feed, which led to the growth of the soybean processing industry. One of the American proponents was Henry Ford, who was interested in both nutritional and industrial use of soybeans. Soy was used to make plastic parts for Fords Model T automobile. By the 1970s, the US supplied 2/3 of the worlds soybeans, and in 2006, the US, Brazil, and Argentina grew 81% of the world production. Most of the USA and Chinese crops are used domestically, those in South America are exported to China. Modern Uses Soybeans contain 18% oil and 38% protein: they are unique among plants in that they supply protein equal in quality to animal protein. Today, the main use (about 95%) is as edible oils with the rest for industrial products from cosmetics and hygiene products to paint removers and plastics. The high protein makes it useful for livestock and aquaculture feeds. A smaller percentage is used to make soy flour and protein for human consumption, and an even smaller percentage is used as edamame. In Asia, soybeans are used in a variety of edible forms, including tofu, soymilk, tempeh, natto, soy sauce, bean sprouts, edamame, and many others. The creation of cultivars continues, with new versions suitable for growing in different climates (Australia, Africa, Scandinavian countries) and or for developing different traits making soybean suitable for human use as grains or beans, animal consumption as forage or supplements, or industrial uses in the production of soy textiles and papers. Amendment for Protection of the American Flag Free Essays
As Americans, we live in a nation that provides unlimited opportunity and freedom that is unparalleled in the history of the human experience. Through it all, the flag of our country has stood as a symbol of that freedom and opportunity. Men and women have died to protect it and Americans from all walks of life have sacrificed a great deal to freely display it. We will write a custom essay sample on Amendment for Protection of the American Flag or any similar topic only for you Order Now However, all of this is countered with a frightening fact- The Constitution of the United States of America promotes desecration of the flag through the protection of flag burning as an expression of free speech (Goldstein, 1994). Therefore, the Constitution cries out for an amendment to protect the flag at all costs because without protection of the very symbol of freedom, the underlying democracy will in time fall by the wayside as well. This should not be taken as a harbinger of the end of democracy, however. In this speech, the following main points will be discussed: â⬠¢ There are far too many cases of flag desecration, as will be proven by statistics â⬠¢ The problem of flag desecration will not go away by itself, so action is needed â⬠¢ Without action, the freedom that the flag represents will go up in flames like the abused flags themselves II. NEED STEP: Flag Desecration is Far Too Common The disrespect that has been shown the flag of the United States, in the most extreme cases, involves the flag being burned. While this makes an excellent photo opportunity for the media, the other examples of disrespect that the flag has been shown in recent years is far more common and degrading than an outright burning. Specific examples of this disrespect include the perversion of the flag under the excuse that the flag is being used for artistic purposes and therefore is legitimate as artistic expression, such as the use of the flag as a canvas upon which pornographic scenes are painted, use of the flag as offensive products such as the Old Glory Condoms offered online for sale, and the presentation of destruction of the flag in plays and movies, disguised as an essential part of the plot (Chu, et al, 2003). All of this is reinforced by powerful organizations like the American Civil Liberties Union that use their clout in courts of law to defend those who come under legal scrutiny because of their flag abusing activities (Arbuckle, 2003). Because there are so many perversely innovative ways to disgrace the American flag, the problem of desecration will not go away by itself; rather, evidence suggests that it will only get worse. Therefore, ways to protect the flag must exist. III. SATISFACTION STEP: There are Ways to Protect the Flag It would seem that the flag should be protected from those that would casually destroy it for their own benefit. So, how can this be accomplished? First, the implementation of a Constitutional amendment to ban the desecration of the American flag must take place, regardless of the weak excuses that have been offered to legitimize it. The justification for such an amendment lies in an important distinction between freedom of expression and freedom of conduct. The Constitution provides for the right of the individual to express themselves freely, which gives the impression that one is given the freedom to speak freely, peacefully assemble, challenge the government if they perceive that injustice exists, and the other rights enumerated in the Bill of Rights and elsewhere. However, there is a limit on conduct, constitutionally speaking. No one is given the right to act out in any way that theyââ¬â¢d like. Therefore just as one would not be permitted to assault an individual with whom they disagreed, no one should be allowed to, in essence, assault the flag if they disagree with the government, or for any other purpose (Foerstel 1997). When and only when the Constitution bans the destruction of the flag will we see a total protection of the freedoms that the flag represents. IV. VISUALIZATION STEP: Without Protection, Democracy Suffers If the flag is not protected, it would seem that it would only be the beginning of a wholesale sacrifice of all of the freedoms that have been provided by our founding fathers, protected with the blood of many of our best and brightest citizens, and laid out in the Constitution. It will only be through an amendment of that very Constitution that the flag is safe. If the flag is not safe, it is entirely possible that from that point the powerful ACLU and other organizations like it will use their power to make it acceptable for other unacceptable actions to be condoned under the guise of expression of freedom, such as illegal drug use, child abuse, and the like. The awful possibilities are truly endless. Simply put if we do not constitutionally protect the flag, a free-for-all will likely result as the other rules of civil conduct, one by one, are subsequently challenged and defeated. In the end result, only those with the money and power will have their agendas-for better or worse- advanced. Anarchy and evil will prevail without solid regulations to prevent such occurrences. V. ACTION STEP: Everyone Needs to Get Involved Sadly, the ultimate sacrifices that Americans have made in the name of freedom, from the hills of Lexington and Concord to the deserts of Iraq and Afghanistan, are likely to continue as long as the American nation exists. However aside from these valiant efforts, everyone who loves democracy and freedom must get involved in the effort to protect the American flag. There are several ways for the common person to personally solve the problem of flag desecration: First, support for the Constitutional amendment must exist. Citizens should take advantage of their freedom of expression to speak out in support of this effort. The circulation of petitions to gain the support of others will go a long way to appeal to elected officials about the importance of the amendment. Likewise, soliciting these elected officials to speak publically in support of the amendment would be an excellent method. From the sacred point of view, church groups should also gather together regardless of religious affiliation to make a difference (Wall, 1995). Speaking out and organizing will be the best way to facilitate a flag protection amendment. VI. CONCLUSION: Summing it Up In an age where traditions and symbols are being discarded one by one, the flag must be protected at all costs; if not, the bloodshed in the past will all be in vain. Sadly, as has been discussed, the flag is sacrificed for profit, personal interests and entertainment- basically, the slimmest of reasons. Thus, the call goes out to everyone to be vocal, solicit flag protection from their friends and neighbors as well as elected officials, and never give up. The America that our children and grandchildren ultimately inherit is the one that we create today. We owe it not only to ourselves but also to generations yet unknown to us to preserve liberty, and justice for all. The task before us is clear- if we protect the flag, the flag will ultimately protect us! Works Cited Arbuckle, M. R. (2003). He is contemplating suicide because his life has become difficult for him (Eirion HyperApps, 2012). The mirrors help Hamlet reflect on life and also see the advantages and disadvantages of whichever decision he would make.Advertising We will write a custom essay sample on To be or not to be specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More Branagh uses the tone and gestures that make it possible for the audience to feel what he feels (Eirion HyperApps, 2012). He has to choose between life and death. He clenches and then raises his hand to threaten and express his anger in the way life is taking him. As the actor and the camera approach the mirror, his image also gets closer to it. This brings out his emotions, which would be invisible in the real world. It is symbolic in the sense that dreams might come true. When Branagh jerks out his knife and directs it towards the reflection, it emerges that the desire to live overshadows that of dying (Eirion HyperApps, 2012).. He only taps the dagger at the mirror rather than using it on himself. Laurence Olivierââ¬â¢s production of Hamlet presents this soliloquy in a different way. This scene displays Hamlet sitting on a cliff staring at the sea (Karldallas, 2010). He is in deep thoughts. This can be clearly seen on his face and in his voice. Initially, Hamlet seems to have totally made up his mind. He speaks in a pessimistic tone, and his facial expressions agree with his words. From the beginning to when he says â⬠To die: to sleep; to sleep,â⬠we believe that he will die. At the peak of his disillusionment, he pulls out a dagger to commit suicide, but realizes that his death will not help to solve his p roblems (Karldallas, 2010). The man suddenly drops his ambition to kill himself and raises his voice while reciting the remaining part of the soliloquy. The words and performances that follow carry a somehow optimistic tone. Hamletââ¬â¢s attitude to life has changed. Now he seems livelier than before, which shows his renewed readiness to live (Karldallas, 2010). Hamlet looks at his dagger and disposes it into the sea. Then, he stands up and walks to the edge of the cliff, looks into the sea and walks away from this point. This performance, therefore, takes the audience through the whole process of attitude transformation within Hamlet. Hawkeââ¬â¢s version takes a different setting. In this version, Hamlet walks aimlessly in a library looking very depressed (MarceloCordioli, 2008). He looks at the books on the shelves as he walks back and forth, but seems not to notice them. His choice of setting is appropriate as it helps to bring out the picture of Hamletââ¬â¢s mind. His l ack of concentration on the books shows that he is in trouble. At some point, he even stands in one position not knowing what to do next.Advertising Looking for essay on art and design? Let's see if we can help you! Get your first paper with 15% OFF Learn More The turning point is when he sees a man shooting another man in a movie (MarceloCordioli, 2008). This makes him wake up from his ââ¬Å"sleepâ⬠. Before this point, Hamlet thinks without speaking, which shows the audience that he is too depressed. Shortly after the movie incident, the man speaks out his thoughts loudly, thus, showing a transformed attitude to life (MarceloCordioli, 2008). The performance I like most is the one presented by Olivier. The director chooses a very befitting setting. He puts Hamlet on top of a cliff near the sea (MarceloCordioli, 2008). He speaks in a resigned tone and his facial expression changes with the direction of his thoughts. Hamlet looks very depressed at the beginning, bu t becomes somehow lively when he makes up his mind to live. This version brings out Shakespeareââ¬â¢s original idea better than the other two. The author wanted to bring out a very depressed Hamlet; a Hamlet who lost a father and intends to kill the person who murdered his father, and married his mother. He even ends up killing the wrong person in the process. Olivier captures this state of mind by his choice of setting (a cliff near the sea), and Hamletââ¬â¢s actions when he point a dagger at himself, throws it into the sea and walks away after deciding to spare his life (MarceloCordioli, 2008). The actorââ¬â¢s facial expressions are also appropriate in showing his state of mind. The other two performances do not express Shakespeareââ¬â¢s ideas fully. The setting Branagh chooses is not the best as he uses too much symbolism, especially the mirrors. The palace he depicts also does not make this version bring out a vivid picture of somebody who wants to commit suicide. Th e palace would have done better in the scenes involving happy moments than melancholic ones. Hawkeââ¬â¢s version, on the other hand, only concentrates on movements, tone and facial expressions, but not on actions. It portrays Hamlet as a person in deep thought, who would not want to commit suicide or kill somebody. The use of actions would have complemented the facial expressions, movements and tone. The result would have enabled the audience to envision what Shakespeare wanted them to see. References Eirion HyperApps. (2012, September, 8). Hamlet, To be or not to be-Kenneth Branagh. Adolphus Busch essays
Adolphus Busch essays The King of Brewers, oddly enough, was not really a brewer at all: he was a super-salesman, and perhaps the greatest ever heard of in America. Granted that he knew good beer and ever sought after it, the fact remains that he did not know how to make it at all. In the same course of time he found men who did, but that was a mere detail. He sold the bad almost as efficiently as he sold the good. He could have sold anything. At one point in the early career of Anheuser-Busch its product was so inferior that St. Louis rowdies were known to project mouthfuls of it back over the bar. But Adolphus kept on selling it, and it became better, and eventually the best in America. Adolphus Busch was born on July 10, 1839 to Ulrich and Barbara Pfeiffer Busch. Growing up in Kastel, near Mainz, Germany, Adolphus was the twenty- first of twenty-two children. At the age of eighteen, he moved to the United States, to join his three brothers in St. Louis, Missouri. He first started working on the riverfront as a clerk in a wholesale supply house, but was soon interrupted by the outbreak of the Civil War. There was nothing to interest him in the war, so he withdrew honorably after a brief service to enter the brewers supply business. In 1859, Adophus joined in a partnership with Ernst Wattenberg to form Wattenberg, Busch, and Company, a wholesale commission house. This particular wholesale house became the most prosperous in St. Louis at the time. Among his customers was Eberhard Anheuser. In 1859, Eberhard, a successful St. Louis businessman, first financed a loan to a struggling neighborhood brewery called The Bavarian. After purchasing the brewery, he renamed it as E. Anheuser and Company. Eberhard, being a brewer and not a salesman, found it hard to dispose of the beer that his small equipment produced. Before long he found himself owing Adolphus a seemingly large sum of money. The bill kept growing larger, and...

Learning Processes Research Paper Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words
Learning Processes - Research Paper Example For example, typewriters may not be a good idea for drafting letters in the current world which forced even experienced typewriters to learn computers and its application software. This paper briefly analyses the learning processes, its effects on behavior and thinking. ââ¬Å"Learning is a process leading to relatively permanent behavioral change or potential behavioral change. As we learn, we alter the way we perceive our environment, the way we interpret the incoming stimuli, and therefore the way we behaveâ⬠(Psychology 101, 2003). Learning is definitely observable. For example, a child who suffers burns while touching the candle flame will never repeat it because of his learning that flames can cause burning and pain. In other words, the child learns to modify his behavior while seeing a candle flame which is observable. In other words learning will help a person to improve or modify his behaviors. It is not necessary that learning always result in improvement; in some cases, learning results in adjustments rather than improvements. For example, most of the people are nowadays complain about the enormous stress they were undergoing. All these stresses are the result of improper adjustments. Through learning, a person will be capable of pr oper adjustments and the release of tension. A fresher will always face different kinds of difficulties while joining an organization. But experience or learning will reduce his difficulty levels while performing later. ââ¬Å"Learning implies the acquisition of knowledge from experience, while thinking involves the conscious processing and use of knowledgeâ⬠(Learning and thinking: what science tells us about teaching, 2007). Like the way in which behavior is associated with learning, thinking is also related to learning. A person who knows nothing about computers may change his perceptions or thinking about computers once he learned it. Same way, learning helps a person to think differently.

Juvenile Crime Essay -- Juvenile Crime Essays
Juvenile Crime Juvenile crime rates have nearly doubled in most countries. In the news we keep hearing about youngsters got mixed up in shady affairs and committing petty crimes. Firstly they just steal an apple from the market stands, then rob a small shop, next day we learn about a 17-year-old kid who killed his classmates. People are concerned and rightly so. That's all what we do or maybe give them a harsh punishment. It seems that the problem has only focused on punishment and very little on prevention or intervention. There is no single cause of violence but we can certainly list a lot of risk factors, which increase the development of delinquent behavior. These include child abuse and family disintegration, violating behavior, academic failure, school dropout, and lack of contact with the society, fighting with peers and antisocial behavior early in life. In order to reveal the real background of juvenile crime it's obviously not enough to stop at this point. Probably none of the young delinquents were born with aggression, rage and hatred. Their environment and our society have turned them into who they are today. Juveniles have to face the cruel sides of the world too early and they are not well prepared for it yet. Some of them are able to deal with it, some of them are not. The latter shocked by the realization will escape to the world of crimes so trying to hide themselves from all the disappointment. Yellowstone Super Volcano
The Yellowstone volcano is known to many as the most dangerous volcano is America. Right now, the ground underneath Yellowstone National Park is rising at an alarming rate. In fact, it is rising at the rate of about three inches per year., which is practically unheard of. The reason why this is such a concern is because underneath the park sits the Yellowstone supervolcano, the largest volcano in North America. Scientists tell us that it is inevitable that it will erupt again one day, and when it does the devastation will be almost unimaginable. But could it cause a mass extinction? A full-blown eruption of the Yellowstone supervolcano would dump a 10 foot deep layer of volcanic ash up to 1,000 miles away, and it would put much of the United States as uninhabitable. With enough warning, the states near Yellowstone could be evacuated, which would largely avoid a great number of deaths caused by the downpour of ash. However, that's just in the short term, the aftermath would be the pro blem. For several days, ash would hang in the air, making it difficult to breathe. That blanket of ash covering the country would smother vegetation and pollute the water supply, which will quickly lead to a nationwide food crisis. As for the rest of the world, it would face a few years of mild climate change caused by the supereruption's ash cloud, which would wrap around the globe, casting Earth in shadow for several days and altering the chemical composition of the atmosphere for a decade or so. However, recent research shows the global impacts of supervolcanoes are less severe than scientists once thought.Scientists now think the vast majority of Earth's species would weather a Yellowstone supereruption just fine. They don't see any evidence in the geologic record of mass extinctions coinciding with supereruptions. In conclusion, they don't predict extinctions to result from such geologic events in the future.References1) http://www.nps.gov/yell/naturescience/volcanoqa.htm 2)htt p://www.livescience.com/20714-yellowstone-supervolcano-eruption.html

Sleep is an important biological necessity that all people need to maintain a healthy lifestyle. Sleep allows people to recharge for a new day with sufficient energy levels and is one of the most important factors that aid in critical brain functioning, aiding with all cognitive functions such as: memory, learning, decision making, and critical thinking. This makes sleep extremely important for academic performance. Donââ¬â¢t waste time! Our writers will create an original "Consequences of Sleep Deprivation" essay for you Create order Research show that undergraduates are the majority of people who dont receive the amount of sleep they should be getting. Researchers state sleep deprivation is why majority of undergraduates receive low academic scores aside from stress which contributes to sleep deprivation. The purpose of this proposal is to find out what factors are involved in creating the epidemic of sleep deprivation in academics.Sleep is a living necessity for everyone to live a healthy lifestyle in which they canFunction well and think properly. It assists in memory consolidation, learning, decision making, as well as critical thinking (Gilbert Weaver, 2010). Therefore, keeping a solid and sufficient sleeping schedule is necessary for keeping these cognitive functions at sufficient levels for positive performance outlook for the person, whether it be at work, home, or even school. It would be ideal for everyone to receive adequate amounts of sleep in order to keep a positive outlook and determination to accomplish goals throughout the day. Poor and low performances are a result of poor sleep quality and sleep deprivation is especially evident among undergraduates. Since undergraduates have such busy work, school, and personal lives to attend to, sleep cycles begin to be overrun by it in a negative manner that can cross over affect those other factors themselves. Depending on the day of the week they tend to have irregular sleep-cycles because their sleep schedule may vary from day to day because of their activities throughout the week and may report dissatisfaction with sleep as a result of poor sleep quality (Gilbert Weaver, 2010). Ther e are many causes as to why sleep deprivation occurs in undergraduates. In a study done by Ahrberg and his colleagues (2012), they found that different modes of stress affect the circadian sleep rhythms of the students. OF these modes of stress, stress from work and school are the most prevalent. A working student can feel stress from going to school, then working to hard at their job, and then having to come home to do more schoolwork until the early hours of the day. Students who do not have a job may also feel the same stresses as working students if they spend too much time procrastinating and must spend time working on schoolwork until the early morning as well. Ahrberg and his colleagues (2012) also state that as a result of sleeping this late, sleep deprivation acts as another stressor on the student.More causes of sleep deprivation as stated by Tsai and Li (2004), are gender and grade differences. In Tsai and Lis study, they found that female students tend to receive lesser sleep with poorer sleep quality and more awakenings in the middle of the night compared to male students. The male students would receive more sleep with better quality. This is because women went to bed later but rose earlier. According to Tsai and Li (2004), younger students such as undergraduates also tended to sleep less than seniors no matter what their gender. This may be because of fewer workloads and the more relaxed attitude of seniors since they have their life more balanced out as opposed to the incoming freshmen that are just trying to figure things out. The undergraduates may feel more stress as they try to balance having a social life and keeping up with their academics at the same time. As a result, sleep deprivation can be caused by both gender differences and grade differences. Many studies in the past have shown that sleep deprivation does correlate with poor academic performance because of lower abilities in cognition as a result of poor sleep quality. In the study done by Gilbert and Weaver (2010), the two researchers found that sleep loss interferes with a students academic, extracurricular and vocational choices. They also found that the number of hours students sleep in a 24-hour period has greatly decreased over the years while sleep dissatisfaction has increased. Another study done by Medeiros and three other colleagues (2001), found a correlation between poor academic performances and sleep deprivation but in this study, they analyzed how irregular sleep cycles can be the result of different days of the week. For example, their participants tended to have prolonged sleep during the weekends because of their loss of sleep during the weekdays because of school (Medeiros et al., 2001). Since humans have the tendency to continue sleeping late as the result of their human circadian rhythm, sleep deprivation is further worsened (Medeiros et al., 2001). As stated before by Ahrberg and his colleagues (2012), stress can also worsen the desynchronization of circadian rhythms and make people moody and cause them to not be as alert as they should be. In a similar study done by Kelly, W. and two other colleagues (2001), they also found that sleep deprivation greatly affects a students ability to perform well in their classes. This is evident through the students GPAs. Kelly and colleagues reported that people who slept 9 hours or more in a 24-hour period had significantly higher GPAs than short sleepers who sleep 6 hours or less in a 24-hour period. These short sleepers also tended to show signs of anxiousness, were less creative, more neurotic, and more prone to hallucinate as well (Kelly, Kelly, Clanton, 2001). The purpose of this research is to examine what contributes to sleep deprivation and see how it then affects academic performance. Past research has shown the effects of stress, gender, and grade differences on sleep deprivation. It would also be interesting to see if there are other factors that worsen sleep deprivation. Hypothesis: Participants who are female, have high amounts of stress, and are college freshmen are more likely to experience more sleep deprivation and as a result perform poorly academically.

Gullivers Travels Houyhnhnmland Essay Example For Students
Gullivers Travels Houyhnhnmland Essay One of the most interesting questions about Gullivers Travels is whether the Houyhnhnms represent an ideal of rationality or whether on the other hand they are the butt of Swifts satire. In other words, in Book IV, is Swift poking fun at the talking horses or does he intend for us to take them seriously as the proper way to act? If we look closely at the way that the Houyhnhnms act, we can see that in fact Swift does not take them seriously: he uses them to show the dangers of pride. First we have to see that Swift does not even take Gullver seriously. For instance, his name sounds much like gullible, whichsuggests that he will believe anything. Also, when he first sees the Yahoos and they throw excrement on him, he responds by doing the same in return until they run away. He says, I must needs discover some more rational being, (203) even though as a human he is already the most rational being there is. This is why Swift refers to Erasmus Darwins discovery of the origin of the species and the voyage of the Beagleto show how Gulliver knows that people are at the top of the food chain. But if Lemule Gulliver is satirized, so are the Houyhnhnms, whose voices sound like the call of castrati. They walk on two legs instead of four, and seem to be much like people. As Gulliver says, It was with the utmost astonishment that I witnessed these creatures playing the flute and dancing a Vienese waltz. To my mind, they seemed like the greatest humans ever seen in court, even more dextrous than the Lord Edmund Burke (162). As this quote demonstrates, Gulliver is terribly impressed, but his admiration for the Houyhnhnms is short-lived because they are so prideful. For instance, the leader of the Houyhnhnms claims that he has read all the works of Charles Dickens, and that he can singlehandedly recite the names of all the Kings and Queens of England up to George II. Swift subtly shows that this Houyhnhnms pride is misplaced when, in the middle of the intellectual competition, he forgets the name of Queen Elizabeths husband. Swifts satire of the Houyhnhnms comes out in other ways as well. One of the most memorable scenes is when the dapple grey mare attempts to woo the horse that Guenivre has brought with him to the island. First she acts flirtatiously, parading around the bewildered horse. But when this does not have the desired effect, she gets another idea: As I watched in amazement from my perch in the top of a tree, the sorrel nag dashed off and returned with a yahoo on her back who was yet more monstrous than Mr. Pope being fitted by a clothier. She dropped this creature before my nag as if offering up a sacrifice. My horse sniffed the creature and turned away. (145) It might seem that we should take this scene seriously as a failed attempt at courtship, and that consequently we should see the grey mare as an unrequited lover. But it makes more sense if we see that Swift is being satiric here: it is the female Houyhnhnm who makes the move, which would not have happened in eighteenth-century Englan d. The Houyhnhm is being prideful, and it is that pride that makes him unable to impress Gullivers horse. Gulliver imagines the horse saying, Sblood, the notion of creating the bare backed beast with an animal who had held Mr. Pope on her back makes me queezy (198). .uab5fbc2dc49053ca6b607b72e51d1bc8 , .uab5fbc2dc49053ca6b607b72e51d1bc8 .postImageUrl , .uab5fbc2dc49053ca6b607b72e51d1bc8 .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .uab5fbc2dc49053ca6b607b72e51d1bc8 , .uab5fbc2dc49053ca6b607b72e51d1bc8:hover , .uab5fbc2dc49053ca6b607b72e51d1bc8:visited , .uab5fbc2dc49053ca6b607b72e51d1bc8:active { border:0!important; } .uab5fbc2dc49053ca6b607b72e51d1bc8 .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .uab5fbc2dc49053ca6b607b72e51d1bc8 { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .uab5fbc2dc49053ca6b607b72e51d1bc8:active , .uab5fbc2dc49053ca6b607b72e51d1bc8:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .uab5fbc2dc49053ca6b607b72e51d1bc8 .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .uab5fbc2dc49053ca6b607b72e51d1bc8 .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .uab5fbc2dc49053ca6b607b72e51d1bc8 .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .uab5fbc2dc49053ca6b607b72e51d1bc8 .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .uab5fbc2dc49053ca6b607b72e51d1bc8:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .uab5fbc2dc49053ca6b607b72e51d1bc8 .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .uab5fbc2dc49053ca6b607b72e51d1bc8 .uab5fbc2dc49053ca6b607b72e51d1bc8-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .uab5fbc2dc49053ca6b607b72e51d1bc8:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: Genetic Engineering in Agriculture Essay A final indication that the Houyhnmns are not meant to be taken seriously occurs when the leader of the Houynhms visits Lilliput, where he visits the French Royal Society. He goes into a room in which a scientist is trying to turn wine into water (itself a prideful act that refers to the marriage at Gallilee). The scientist has been working hard at the experiment for many years without success, when the Houyhnmn arrives and immediately knows that to do: The creature no sooner stepped through the doorway than he struck upon a plan. Slurping up all the wine in sight, he quickly made water in a bucket that sat near the door (156). He h as accomplished the scientists goal, but the scientist is not happy, for his livelihood has now been destroyed. Swifts clear implication is that even though the Houyhnhmns are smart, they do not know how to use that knowledge for the benefit of society, only for their own prideful agrandizement. Throughout Gullivers Travels, the Houyhnhms are shown to be an ideal gone wrong. Though their intent might have been good, they dont know how to do what they want to do because they are filled with pride. They mislead Gulliver and they even mislead themselves. The satire on them is particularly well explained by the new born Houyhnhm who, having just been born, exclaims, With this sort of entrance, what must I expect from the rest of my life! (178).

How Does Harper Lee Use Minor Characters in to Kill a Mockingbird to Explore Some of the Main Concerns of the Text Essay Example
How Does Harper Lee Use Minor Characters in to Kill a Mockingbird to Explore Some of the Main Concerns of the Text? Paper Harper Leeââ¬â¢s novel To Kill a Mockingbird, set in the days of the 1930ââ¬â¢s but written in the 1960ââ¬â¢s during the Civil Rights debate shows major concerns for this time. Lee explores the main concerns of courage, racism, law and justice with the use of minor characters. The Alabama township of Maycomb, where Lee sets her story is home to a combination of social classes and racial backgrounds. Harper Leeââ¬â¢s characterisation of the minor characters demonstrates the main concern of racism. The town of Maycomb was very divided by race and when it came to Mr Raymond the town was shocked and didnââ¬â¢t accept him, so he believed that he was better off being known as a drunk rather than the men that lived the way he does ââ¬Å"because thatââ¬â¢s the way [he] wants to liveâ⬠(p. 221). The fact that he has half black children says a bad message to most of the white people. When Calpurnia takes the children to the ââ¬ËFirst Purchase Churchââ¬â¢ she had a positive attitude towards the idea. She dressed them like they ââ¬Å"were going to Mardi Grasâ⬠(p. 30), she took this opportunity to show the children that some people arenââ¬â¢t like what they had witnessed with the white people in town. When Lula yells out ââ¬Å"you ainââ¬â¢t got no business bringinââ¬â¢ those white chillum hereâ⬠(p. 131), it goes against the rest of the churchââ¬â¢s morals that anyone way welcome as ââ¬Å"itââ¬â¢s the same godâ⬠(p. 131). The Law and Jus tice are shown as a concern to the characters of TKAM. When Atticus makes his final speech to the jury, he comments on how ââ¬Å"the defendant is not guilty but somebodyâ⬠¦isâ⬠(p. 24). This shows how even though Tom Robinson had done nothing wrong and by law he shouldnââ¬â¢t therefore have a punishment he was still found guilty by the jury, he was guilty by law but not by justice. It is after Jem has matured he finds that the law doesnââ¬â¢t always display true justice. Jem comments to Atticus about Tomââ¬â¢s death sentence from the jury ââ¬Å"doesnââ¬â¢t make it rightâ⬠(p. 243) how it shouldnââ¬â¢t be up to the jury because the jury wasnââ¬â¢t like him. Jem had matured to understand that the town and the jury werenââ¬â¢t justice and that the law, as long as being decided by a jury, was not even-handed. The Law and Justice, the racism in the township of Maycomb and the courage some of the characters held were the main concerns and themes displayed in Harper Leeââ¬â¢s novel To Kill a Mockingbird. It shows the reader that Maycomb during the 1930ââ¬â¢s went through hardship of the differences of people.
